1. Basic Policy for Personal Information Protection

JSL International Ltd., (hereinafter referred to as “the Company”) is developing various businesses such as operating an online Japanese language education system, in addition to operating Japanese language schools, and, in doing so, will handle the personal information of various persons related to the Company such as customers, users, students, learners, examinees, alumni and faculty members (hereinafter collectively referred to as “Related Individuals”). The Company has established this Privacy Policy in order to facilitate its proper handling of personal information, and will take the utmost care to protect personal information.

2. Measures to Protect Personal Information

  • The Company will comply with the Act on the Protection of Personal Information, the guidelines established by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and other norms.
  • The Company will use personal information only within the scope of the prescribed purpose of use.
  • The Company will not provide personal information to any third party without the consent of a principal (which means a specific individual identifiable by personal information; hereinafter referred to as “the Principal”) except where otherwise provided in this Privacy Policy.
  • The Company will acquire personal information in a legal and appropriate manner, will strictly manage personal information, and will take appropriate preventive and corrective measures against unauthorized access, loss, destruction, alteration and leakage.
  • The Company will promptly respond to any inquiry or any request for correction or deletion made by the Principal with respect to the content of its personal data collected by the Company, to the extent reasonably permitted under the laws and regulations.
  • The Company will strive to raise awareness of the importance of personal information protection amongst its faculty members, employees and contractors.

3. What is Personal Information?

“Personal information” means information about an individual that the individual has provided to the Company engaged in operation of various businesses, such as the individual's name, date of birth, telephone number, address, e-mail address and other information that can identify the specific individual (including information that can be easily matched with other information to identify the specific individual.)

4. Purpose of Use of Personal Information

The Company will use personal information within the scope of the following purpose of use:

  • To confirm the content of customer/user applications, to make registration of users, to authenticate users, and to provide services;
  • To get in touch with, and to provide support and information to, students, learners, users and other Related Individuals in the course of business;
  • To issue invoices for services/classes and to contact for payment confirmation, etc.;
  • To confirm applications for e-mail newsletters and to deliver e-mail newsletters;
  • To provide information about a continuing subscription to periodicals such as e-mail newsletters;
  • To provide information that may be useful for all Related Individuals (about exhibitions, seminars, other events, publications, etc.);
  • To confirm and collect opinions relating to events such as exhibitions and seminars;
  • To conduct surveys on the use of the Company's services, products and websites, etc., and to deliver information about companies/organizations that may be useful for all Related Individuals; and
  • To request cooperation with surveys and participation in various events, and to report the results of surveys, events, etc.

5. Provision to Third Parties

The Company will not provide personal data to any third party without the consent of the Principal, except under the following circumstances where:

  • it is necessary to protect life, body or property and it is difficult to obtain the consent of the Principal;
  • it is particularly necessary to improve public health or to promote the sound development of children and it is difficult to obtain the consent of the Principal;
  • it is necessary for a government agency or a local government, or a party outsourced by either of the government agency or the legal government to cooperate with the execution of affairs prescribed by laws and regulations or ordinances, and obtaining the consent of the individual could hinder the execution of those affairs;
  • the Company has received a demand for disclosure under laws and regulations from a public agency, etc. (court, prosecutor, police, etc.) or an equivalent organization;
  • the Company will provide the information as anonymously processed information (information about statistical data processed so that specific individual cannot be identified) as permitted by laws and regulations;
  • the Principal has consented to or has requested the disclosure of its personal data to a third party; or
  • the Company is otherwise permitted under laws and regulations.

6. Provision to Contractors

The Company may outsource the handling of personal information in whole or in part to contractors (including its overseas partners, etc.) In this case, the Company will manage its contractors as necessary and appropriate to ensure that the outsourced personal data can be safely managed.

7. Joint Use

The Company will jointly use personal data within the following scope in order to realize higher quality Japanese language education and to provide better services and a detailed support system.

  1. (1) Scope of personal data to be jointly used All personal data entered, input or conveyed orally by the individual in applications, registration and inquiries made during the course of business, including, but not limited to, the individual's name, nationality, gender, address, date of birth, telephone number, e-mail address, home country contact information, attendance status, service usage history, membership fee payment situation, and all personal data required by the Company for the operation of the business.
  2. (2) Scope of joint users The Company will jointly use personal data with its subsidiaries, affiliates and overseas subsidiaries and its partners to whom it has outsourced business for promoting services or implementing operations, support, etc., who are engaged in business in Japan or in the country where the Related Individuals are a citizen or resident. The Company will not jointly use personal data with its partners engaged in business solely in countries that are not connected with the Related Individuals.
  3. (3) Purpose of joint use The same as the purpose of use of the information by the Company.

8. Disclosure of Retained Personal Data

If the Principal has requested disclosure of the Company’s retained personal data, then the Company will disclose the retained personal data with respect to the Principal to the Principal within a reasonable period of time in accordance with the Company's prescribed method. However, disclosure may not be possible under the following circumstances where any disclosure:

  • may cause harm to the life, body, property or other rights and interests of the individual or a third party;
  • may significantly hinder the Company’s proper execution of business; or
  • would otherwise be in breach of laws and regulations.

9. Correction to Retained Personal Data

If the content of the Company's retained personal data is not accurate, then the Company will, upon request of the Principal, conduct the necessary investigation and correct, add or delete the content of the retained personal data based on the outcomes of such investigation within the scope necessary to achieve the purpose of use of the information, except in the case where special procedures regarding the correction of content, etc. are prescribed by laws and regulations.

10. Revision to this Privacy Policy

The Company is constantly reviewing its handling of personal information and may revise this Privacy Policy at any time as needed.
